This active learning course covers the principles and practices of sustainable agriculture in controlled environments with a focus on international perspectives. The class aims to provide an overview of the global context, industry outlook (US vs. EU), and growing environments, including greenhouses and warehouse/vertical farms. Additionally, students will learn the fundamentals of hydroponic systems, growing media, water and nutrition management, climate control (heating, cooling, and ventilation), supplemental lighting, and advanced technologies. The course also covers biological systems, including aquaponics, organic hydroponics, and plant health strategies. Course materials will be based on lectures, slide presentations, and field tours to high-tech facilities.
