Corsi

This course provides an integrated overview of the management, ecology, and behaviour of aquatic animals, with a primary focus on fish. Students will gain foundational knowledge of water quality, environmental management, nutritional and ecological requirements, and operational practices for housing and handling aquatic species. The ecological component explores individual adaptations, population dynamics, community interactions, and modern methods for monitoring aquatic ecosystems, including environmental DNA. The ethology module introduces key behavioural patterns, welfare indicators, and practical approaches to observation, enrichment, and stress reduction in both natural and controlled environments.

By the end of the course, students will be able to assess water quality, apply appropriate nutritional strategies, and manage aquatic facilities effectively. They will also be capable of analysing ecological processes across multiple levels of biological organisation and using ecological and molecular tools for ecosystem monitoring. Furthermore, students will develop the ability to observe and interpret behaviour, identify welfare-related signals, and design improvements to ensure species-appropriate environmental and behavioural conditions.
